Relocating can be a stressful time in anyone’s life, especially when that move is far from your current home. Follow the eight tips below to simplify the process when moving to another state.
Prepare for Your Move
Start making plans as soon as you know you’ll be moving to another state. Get estimates from movers specializing in out-of-state relocation and start collecting packing supplies. Some examples of items most people need are boxes, permanent markers, old towels and newspapers (for wrapping breakables), packing tape, and scissors.
Stick to a Budget
Moving can come with a lot of expenses, especially a long-distance move. Make a budget well in advance and consult it from time to time to make sure you’re not spending too much. Some items to include in your budget: professional movers or truck rental, packing supplies, hotel stays, and transportation costs.
Declutter Your Home Before Moving to Another State
When moving to another state, only take what you truly need. The best way to do this is to go through your belongings a few at a time and decide what you want to keep and what you want to donate (or throw away). Sort your clothes, furniture, craft supplies, toys, books, etc.
Keep Documents Organized
Moving to another state means a new driver’s license, school registration for the kids, and possibly even finding a new job. Keep paperwork you’ll need, such as proof of address, birth certificates, and your lease/mortgage documents, somewhere safe. You’ll want to know exactly where vital paperwork is to minimize stress.
Moving to Another State: Manage the Utilities
Before moving, set up dates to cancel your existing services and utilities, like electricity, internet, and trash pickup. Schedule with utility companies to begin at your new home.
Forward the Mail
About two weeks before your move, contact your local post office to register your change of address and have your mail forwarded. You’ll also want to contact banks, creditors, and other financial institutions to update your mailing address.
Visit Your New Home
When moving to a new state, especially one you’ve never visited before, schedule a trip in advance to check out your new surroundings. If you have kids, use this time to see their new school and locate essential places you’ll need once you move, such as the bank, grocery store, DMV, and post office.
Keep Essentials on Hand When Moving to Another State
Once you’ve arrived at your new home, you may not feel like unpacking immediately, especially if you’ve traveled a long distance. Make sure you pack a bag with essentials, such as toothbrushes, phone chargers, and a change of clothes, so that these things will be readily available on the day of your move.
