What to do When the Lights Go Out

Being without power for even a short period is inconvenient. Gather supplies and prepare early so your home stays safe and comfortable during and after a power outage. Below are six tips that will help you prepare for a power outage in your home.

Prepare for a Power Outage by Buying Flashlights and Batteries

Having a flashlight handy makes everyone feel safer during a power outage. It gives a sense of security to people even though it produces just a small amount of light. Stock your emergency kit with flashlights for each family member and keep extra batteries nearby at all times.

Stock Up on Enough Non-Perishable Food and Water

Stock up on supplies before a power outage so you’re not rushing with everyone else to buy them at the last minute. Purchase foods that don’t require refrigeration and can be stored without spoiling. For water, it’s advisable to have at least one gallon of water per person per day.

Create a Power Outage Emergency Kit

Prepare for a power outage by assembling everything you might need in a backpack or duffle bag. When there is a power outage, it is difficult to scramble for supplies in drawers and closets where it’s hard to see.

Place the emergency kit in a location that’s easily accessible to everyone. This way, you won’t have to start shuffling through your belongings when you need something. It is best to put the kit in a central location that’s easy to get to.

Plan Activities

When the lights are out, make sure you have some fun activities to help pass the time. Activities such as reading or playing board games are ideal during a power outage. It is important to plan these out early, especially if you have younger kids. The games will distract them and keep them occupied until the power returns.

Purchase a Portable Generator to Prepare for a Power Outage

A portable generator will keep things running even after the outage. A generator is especially useful if you live in an area with frequent power outages. Be sure to only power essential items, such as a refrigerator and heater. You shouldn’t try and power your whole house with a generator.

Stay in One Place

As soon as the power goes out, gather everyone in one room and try to stay together. This makes it easier to share the emergency supplies and keep everyone safe at the same time.

Follow these guidelines to prepare for a power outage to keep you and your family safe and comfortable.
